I think that
this quote means that you should hang out with good people if you value the
reputation and it’s better to be alone if you are going to hang out with bad
people. For example you should hang out with friends who you know have a good reputation
of doing their work and paying attention so they could help you have a have a
better reputation and rub off on you but if you hang out with people who have
bad reputations who don’t do their work and are disrespectful people will think
of you as the same way even if you aren’t like that.
